I have been watching the Euros with a lot of interest. And somehow have always preferred the not so obvious things, compared to the obvious ones. Say for example contrary to popular belief among Arsenal fans I believe David Silva is what Arsenal actually need and probably David Villa is something we can do without. Similarly, when I see the Dutch romping home to victory after victory, what I find interesting is not that they have scored some breathtaking goals on the counter attack, but that despite some seriously average defenders the Dutch team have conceded just once (to a delectable Theiry Henry goal) and in general shown a lot of discipline while defending. They have kept their shape at almost all times. This is despite the fact that Bouma (a left back) was playing at the center of the defense (something that cost the French a lot). Even otherwise, Van Bronckhorst usually plays as a defensive midfielder at his current club, and has almost never been known for his defensive capabilities. Khalid Boulharouz has been known for his mistimed ill-advised tackles and Oijer almost always shows his age and lack of pace. Organizing a defense at club level is much easier as you get to work with the team day in day out, but getting similar results at International level is simply amazing. I have to admit, this work of Van Basten is what makes me feel, he can be a great great coach, maybe not as great as he was a player.
As far as Arshavin is concerned, he is a great player, no doubt about that. But is he really needed at a club which has the fire power of Fabregas, Nasri (expected to sign sometime soon), Rosicky, Van Persie and Walcott. I am purposely not mentioning Hleb, as I feel he won’t be here at the start of the season. The above players play in the areas that Arshavin could play in, i.e. either the number 10 position behind the striker, or running the engine from the middle or playing the wing role at Arsenal (which is certainly different from other clubs). Even if Hleb leaves, I don’t see space for Arshavin, unless Wenger doesn’t have faith in Rosicky’s staying fit capabilities. For me, Rosicky—DMF—Fabregas—Nasri would be the first choice midfield with Walcott and Denilson as the primary backups. Another interesting point is that, we have been linked with Arshavin earlier too. If Wenger had to actually get him, he wouldn’t wait for the Euros to start, at least he would have tried to get things done before the start (like Nasri) especially when Arshavin’s club wants an early transfer, if he has to leave. He could and probably should have come in January, now it seems a bit late. Also Arshavin is already 27, a bit further ahead in terms of age, when we compare to the typical Wenger signings. Also, Zenit are supposed to be a fairly rich club. Hence, his salary would already be a decent amount, he has been to the UEFA cup final this season and his club has already qualified for the group stages of Champions League. All these things point out, that he doesn’t exactly need to move from his current club, unless he wants to test himself out in a better league per se.
On the other hand we have Yuri Zhirkov. This is a player who has really impressed me, not for his final touch or finishing, but for being in the heart of every attack that Russia created in almost all their matches. He is 24 (the perfect age to be bought by Wenger), is primarily a left winger who is adept at playing as left wing back. He is very good at using his trickery to get past players, has a fair amount of speed, and works real hard to track back and help the defense. In short, he has all the attributes and is at the right stage of his career to make a move to Arsenal. He could be the left footed winger that we have been missing since Reyes left, and hence provide something different to what the rest of our midfield provides. Also, due to his experience as a wing back he could be an experienced backup for Clichy. Hopefully he won’t be too expensive for us. Come on Wenger, if you are going to make one signing from these Euros this time, it has to be Yuri Zhirkov.

Tht other french left bak is going to be our star winger next season…..I hav forgotten the chaps name ……18 and french…..played in the crappy-cola cup
He’s been doing it for the reserves over the last few months and been getting better and better…..
Also Barazites going to take prem by storm on the wings or up front
BO!
Oh yeah Traore’s his name.
yes it is true that zhirkov is something special i like him very much with his dribbling fast and good for crosses go go go for him
could’nt agree more, i’ve been impressed by zhirkov too.
Completely disagree.. the last thing arsenal need to spend money on is a wing back..
maybe you forgot we have the best wing backs in the Premiership??
and Armand Traore is a huge talent available for back-up as well as kolo and eboue can fill in for sagna
He is a left winger (attacking midfielder) and can work as a wing back. We do lack an out and out winger, especially a left footed one, even if we count Theo to do the job on the right. Traore has been very bad at left back, and it seems he will slowly move further up the pitch, as his positioning is very shaky. Who else can be a backup at LB apart from Gallas (wont like to do it) and Hoyte/Traore (both some way off the mark). Right back is not an issuse, but backup for left back is a concern and a left footed winger an even bigger concern.
na na na hey na na na na< na na na hey na na na
what we need is a squad that has depth in numbers with big players as arsene puts it. Not just teenagers who maight or might not come good. It might be to obvious for yourself ,Frings
Wenger has been asked the question and apparently he said Arshavin is betterbecause there are lots of jerk offs at spurs!! boom boom!
go on Russian Ronaldinho, Arsenal needs you!!!!!!!!!!!!
van Bronckhorst was a LB at Rangers before he came to Arsenal and was very defensive. It’s just he’s played at Arsenal and Barcelona, who like their backs to get forward.
Nasri in front of Walcott is nuts. This kid is slight and has never played in England. To bring him in and put him in front of Theo or even Eboue is not going to happen.
Traore dominated in the reserves last year at LM and will probably be given a chance this season to become a first team regular.
Zhirkov….no no no!
What Arsenal don’t need are more (attacking) left/right backs. First of all we have Rosicky, Vela, RvP, Theo, maybe Nasri who can all play in left Midfield and they’re all natural attackers so if Zhirkov was to wander foward, it would leave a huge gap!
Secondly we’ve never had a Problem going forward and like you said he’s not a finisher.
Nasri as a cover for Hleb is fine. But I can’t understand why Arsene is not interested in signing a central defender and a defensive midfielder..
Agreed that Song is a perfect replacement for Flamini, but will he be played there? or at the centre of defence?
we don’t need another wing back with sagna and clichy we are covered with traore if needed. Arshavin is a proven world class midfield, he’s experienced and his style of play would go hand in hand with ours. He also has scored a goal every 3 or so games whicj is great for a midfielder.
If you look at the russian league zenit is right near the bottom, and according to the papers he has a clause in his contract to leave for a big club for just over £10 million.
Hopefully with Rosicky fully fit and the option of Nasri coming in, a wide player is not required. As others have hinted at, Yaya Toure would be a good acquisition in the middle (hopefully as part of the Pleb deal!). I also think that GAilberto could still play a part, and that’s not also forgeting Diaby, who is due a good season.
Then if Ade does go, then I would love to see David Villa coming in (this would keep Cesc happy). The amount of money mentioned for him, we could re-coup from the sale of Ade.
As for the centre half position, I still personally have faith in Senderos (I remember Tony Adams being barracked by certain sections of the Arsenal faithful, before he became the legend he is.
اوه کی میره این همه راه
i’d rather we sign Ivan Rakitic from Schalke04, i think he’d be a perfect fit for our attack and obviously one for the future as well, we definitely need cover for Rosicky
